Turkish Publishers Association Event Schedule at the 38th International Istanbul Book Fair
38th International Istanbul Book Fair, organized by the cooperation of Turkish Publishers Association and TÜYAP Fairs and Exhibitions Inc., will be held at the TÜYAP Fair and Congress Center – Büyükçekmece between 2-10 November 2019. More than 800 publishers and non-governmental organizations from Turkey and abroad are expected to participate in the fair. Authors will meet their readers at book signings and culture events such as panels, interviews, poetry recitations and workshops for children for nine days. Adnan Özyalçıner is the “Author of Honor” this year and the theme of the fair will be “The 50 Generation in our Literature”.
International Publishers Association (IPA) President Hugo Setzer and Turkish Publishers Association President Kenan Kocatürk will give speeches at the fair’s opening ceremony and inform the participants and the public on the latest developments in the publishing sector in Turkey and in the world. (The opening speeches will be translated into English simultaneously)
Turkish Publishers Association is participating in the fair with a number of attractive events this year. We welcome all our members to our panels and events, which are open to everyone, where there will be many topics of interest to the publishing sector and many speakers from Turkey and abroad!

Panel: A Global Look at the Publishing Sector: Recent developments, threats, problems, trends and opportunities in publishing in the world
Hugo Setzer, President of the IPA – International Publishers Association and José Borghino, Secretary General of the IPA will be guests at the panel “A Global Look at the Publishing Sector” which will be moderated by Kenan Kocatürk, President of the Turkish Publishers Association. History of publishing and where it is today, problems encountered, ways to get out of straits, and new and different trends in the sector will be discussed at the panel.

A panel by Egyptian literary critic Mamdouh Farrag el-Naby, Professor of Arabic Literature and translator Mehmet Hakkı Suçin and poet and writer Adnan Özer, addressing the current state of contemporary Arabic literature, major movements and names and trends, especially in novels and poetry. Fahri Aral, Chief Editor of Mimar Sinan University Publications, will be moderating the panel. Turkish Publishers Association continues its initiatives to draw attention to and increase awareness of the development and dissemination of reading culture in Turkey. The Frankfurt Book Fair also contributes in the panel. Yusuf Ekinci, the former Chair of the Board of Education will moderate the panel “The Role of Books in Establishing Reading Culture in the Education System” where Frank Kühne, CEO of Germany’s Carlsen Publishing and Mine Soysal, Chief Editor of the publishing house Günışığı Kitaplığı will talk as publishers from two different countries, about the importance of introduction of books into the system, collaborations that can and cannot be made with the state, to establish reading culture in the education system in Germany and in Turkey.

Panel: We Actually Read: Turkey’s Current Reading Culture Research
Founded under the leadership of the Turkish Publishers Association which earned the right to grant within the Grant Scheme for Partnerships and Networks executed by the Turkish Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs European Union Directorate, and started its operations on 15 January 2019, the Platform for Dissemination of Reading Culture (OKUYAY Platform) will support pilot projects aiming to disseminate reading culture in four regions of Turkey by bringing together children, parents, teachers, public institutions, libraries and civil society with the publishing stakeholders. Okuyay Platform has renewed the long-time lacked “reading culture research” around Turkey, together with Konda Research and Consultancy and will be sharing the results of this research with the public. Results of this important study will be announced at the TÜYAP Istanbul Book Fair by KONDA General Manager Bekir Ağırdır and KONDA analyst Aydın Erdem.

Freedom of Thought and Expression Awards, which the Turkish Publishers Association gives every year since 1995 to names unafraid to express their thoughts, with the wish that Turkey reaches universal measures of freedom of thought and expression in no time, are finding their owners at the 38th TÜYAP International Istanbul Book Fair this year. Every year, a publisher, an author and a bookstore receive awards, and also an annual Freedom to Publish Report is presented to the public.
